What is TEDx?
TED is a nonprofit organisation dedicated to telling stories, spreading ideas and sparking conversation through short but powerful talks. Since it began in 1984, as a conference where Technology, Entertainment and Design converged, TED has been committed to using the power of ideas to change attitudes, lives and, ultimately, the world in which we live.
TEDx events are independently organized events, created in the spirit of TED’s mission, “ideas worth spreading”. TEDx events bring people together to be a part of a TED-like experience, to hear talks, converse and share ideas around a common theme.
This is the second TEDx event to be held at the school. TEDxLSHTM: Emerging… was held at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine on the 15th September 2015. The event brought together emerging ideas from fifteen speakers at the forefront of their respective disciplines, including Vikram Patel, Karl Blanchet, Will Nutland, Jean Smith and Sophia Walker. For more details, see our 2015 speakers here.
What time does TEDxLSHTM start and finish?
The event will be on 30 September 2017, starts at 9am and talks will finish by 5pm. A reception will then follow, giving the participants a last opportunity to discuss the day’s events. Times are subject to change, so please keep an eye on our website and Facebook for the latest information.
Do I need to bring anything?
Please remember to bring your (digital) ticket and student card (if applicable). If you’re a social media user, there will be lots of opportunities throughout the day to interact across the online community, so a charged smart-phone is a must. Beyond that, all you will need is an open mind and a sense of curiosity!
Who is organising the event?
See our team here.
Where can I get more information on the Programme for the 2017 event?
We are still finalising our complete Programme for the event, which will be announced later in the summer. However, to get a taster, see the announced speakers here.
Is TEDxLSHTM only for health professional/students?
TEDxLSHTM is rooted in the notion that individuals, their health and their wellbeing, are connected and co-dependent. Just as health, and ill health, is something that affects us all, health is in turn affected by us all. Although the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine is a world leader in global health research, TEDxLSHTM will present a wide range of speakers covering a broad spectrum of topics, some health related, some not. For more details, see our speakers announced to date here.
Will there be another event in 2018?
The team organising this year’s TEDxLSHTM will finish their Master’s degrees in September. As an event by run by students, continuity depends on whether there is a willing group of new students to take on TEDxLSHTM. The school has been extremely supportive of the event, and we are confident that the event will become an annual occurrence.
Will I need my ticket to get in? What else will I need?
Yes. Please either print off or download your ticket and bring it along with you on the day. If you have bought a Student Ticket, please bring your student card along with you!
What is included in the ticket price?
Ticket price covers entry to the full programme of speakers and demonstrations in our Networking Space, as well as tea/coffee during the session breaks, lunch and a reception after the event.
I’m a student, do I get a discount?
Yes. Ticket pricing is divided into General and Student prices. Please see our Eventbrite page for pricing details. To be eligible for a student discount, you will need to have either a current student card or a student card that expired within 2017, which you will be required to show us on the day of the event.
Is my ticket transferrable?
Yes. Substitutions will be accepted up until Wednesday 27th September at 12pm (midday) at no extra charge. A request to transfer your tickets must be sent in advance in writing to firstname.lastname@example.org by this date.
What is the cancellation and returns policy?
In line with the LSHTM Eventbrite cancellation and returns policy, if attendees provide notice of cancellation in writing more than 14 days prior to the event, a refund will be issued. Cancellations received 14 days or less prior to the event will not receive a refund. Full terms and conditions can be accessed here.
I have specific dietary requirements, will I be catered for?
Yes. You will be asked to detail any dietary requirements you might have when purchasing your ticket.
Is the event accessible?
London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine is easily accessible for wheelchair users, and the library, where the event will be held, can be reached by lift. If you have any access queries or needs that we can assist with, please contact us.
Can I/my business partner with TedxLSHTM?
As one of the cornerstones of the TEDx ethos is collaboration, we are always interested in creating lasting partnerships, particularly with local businesses in the Bloomsbury area. If you think you could help us out with any of the vital elements of producing the event (catering/printing/merchandise production) or if you believe you could offer our attendees a unique experience in our Networking Space, get in contact.
How do I get involved with TEDxLSHTM 2017?
TEDxLSHTM is only possible due to the passion and hard-work of our volunteers. Connect with us on social media to be kept in the loop about opportunities to get involved as the event draws closer!
